The importance of building links to your website

So number one question I am asked – why do I need links?

You have a great website which looks fabulous (beauty is in the eye of the beholder, does everyone else like it?), it has all the  relevant keywords in the meta-title-tags and description tags (hopefully you’ve not stuffed squillions of keywords into every page, just two or three per page should suffice), the content is well written, highly relevant to your type of business, you have included a  terms and conditions page, a privacy statement, contact form etc etc etc. Ah well, you see, but if you have no links the search engines cannot find you, therefore your beauteous website will not even be shown in the organic search results, or if it is, it will be 850th on page 85!! I suppose you could ask your staff and friends to look at it…perhaps they will buy something, call for some service, unlikely, although no harm in making sure they tell their family and friends about it! Nope, you NEED links so that Google, Yahoo, Bing etc can include your site in the search results.

Second, and this is why a link building campaign is never finished, you need links from good quality, relevant websites in order to gain TRUST and AUTHORITY from the search engines. Remember, just like selling on a market stall, there are lots of other sellers out there saying “come to my shop / website”, “buy your fish here”, “we have a great price today” and so on. Unless you are in a niche market with no competition you need good quality links to impress Google, and you need to keep adding, don’t go mad but a steady drip feed will keep the big G happy and the visitors coming. Links are just like stock – they get old and stale, keep renewing them, your competitors will!

Thirdly, if you are placing your links on good quality sites people visiting these sites may actually click on the link and come to your webby for a look see, and, if you are really lucky, buy something, subscribe to your newsletter or take some form of action that is positive to your company. If you place your links inside good quality content on article directories or via press release or via a Youtube video then there is the distinct possibility of going viral, this si one time a virus can be good for you. Companies, individuals and their websites will link to “good stuff” and add to their site, maybe add it to tweet, or share it with their friend at Facebook. Here’s hoping your campaign to build links is highly successful. To read more articles on link building, please visit our blog.
