Why Are Backlinks So Essential?

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

As a webmaster, you have probably heard about search engine optimization. Probably you have already applied several SEO techniques to promote your website. Backlinks are incoming links to your website received from another web node. As more backlinks a website has, as more its popularity and authority grows in comparison to other similar web pages or sites. Backlinks are also known as inbound links, incoming links (IBL), inlinks and inward links.

Search engines often use the number of backlinks that a website has to evaluate and determine the website reputation and relevance. For example, if a website was penalized by Google for promoting illegal or immoral content and that website links to your website or vice versa, your website will be become less popular, being ignored by search engines.

It doesn’t make sense to receive backlinks from web pages that link back to a large number of different websites. You should rather try to get backlinks from websites with PR 0 or no PR, because their popularity might increase over time. Besides this, every link directed towards your website matters, because it represents a favorable vote from Google. To evaluate the quality of a backlink, you should consider its popularity, Page Rank and authority.

How to get backlinks to your website? Well, there are several ways to do it. It’s highly recommended to opt for web pages and directories that link back to your website without asking you to do the same. It’s an excellent way to get links without offering anything or at least without providing links on your website.

It is always important to get backlinks from pages with a high Page Rank. However, try to have as many backlinks as possible because every vote matters! A high Page Rank can be achieved by increasing the number of backlinks to your page. The more backlinks your page has, the higher your PR will be.

Besides submitting your site to web directories, it’s essential to write quality content to determine people link back to you. Also, participate to online discussions and join social networks, forums and other communities. If possible, buy links on pages with a high Page Rank.

Search relevant keywords for your website and use them in titles and URLs. For example, if your site is about dating and romance, use “dating” and “romance” as keywords. Building quality backlinks is extremely important to SEO, so make sure you’re doing everything in the right way.

backlink

I am going to be giving away guidance, training and advice to people who want to create a presence on the web or are struggling with their current web sites, here is why.

Although excited at the time I have bad memories of building and putting up my first web site back in 2000. Given the amount of expertise and experience connected to the web you might think that someone would have founded a well known web site where novices could go to be availed of all of the basics skills to create a successful web presence. Designing your first web site can be really hard if you don’t have the right skills and understanding.

Things like comprehending the significance of back links and keywords, how they affect search engine page rankings and page authority, and the relationships between these and visitor volumes are complicated and consistently poorly explained by significant numbers of seo consultants on the net. I have talked to so many people on and offline who want to do this and haven’t got the skills that I decided to take some action.

After many years of toiling on the internet, uncovering, learning and practising ways of doing things to create successful web sites by attracting substantial amounts of searchers. I have decided to start teaching.

I have been contemplating this for about twelve months now and whenever I have had some available time I have been creating my educational material. Most people who is starting out or already creating a presence on the web wants a short cut, I’m no different and therefore whenever I have come across excellent content and tools that work I am going to point my students at these rather than try and reinvent the wheel.

Everything I have reviewed that has delivered good or excellent results will be incorporated in my training material and where there are gaps I have filled them in. In my work I have developed some techniques, tools and methods of my own that I constantly use which I will be including in the education.

Before putting any effort whatsoever into creating any web pages you should have considered how you intend to get people to visit and ‘consume’ your content. Whether your website is commercial or not then sooner or later you are going to want to attract visitors. You need a significant proportion of your traffic to come from the search engines. If you are just starting out there is no better form of traffic than the type that comes from the search engines as it wont cost you a penny and it very targeted.

Search engines stay in business by understanding what the user are searching for and delivering relevant results. Searchers will return over and over again to a search engine that delivers the most relevant results. The more frequently users return to the search engine the more opportunity and income the search engines create. The search engine objectives are very similar to the ones you should set for your web pages.Get more users and get them to return often.

So what exactly must you do?. There are two methods that you can use. You can work hard to produce very good content and publish it on your web pages or you can advertise using methods such as Pay Per Click or Google Adwords.

Search engines have a simple philosophy that nothing exists on the web without a keyword or a key phrase . Searches always begin with the entry of a keyword or phrase into the ‘search box’. The search engine performs a look up on its enormous indexes to fetch a list of web pages that contain instances of the keyword and returns them in a predefined order of relevance. The search engines decision about what pages to display in the results are based upon two key factors relevance and authority.

Relevance is a function of the keywords in the text of the webpage and authority is determined by the number and type of back links . Search engines calculate the position of a web page in a returned list of results by measuring the authority and number of backlinks to each page.

Back links are critical to the quality of the search engines perception of your web pages.

Back links have two important properties their ability to influence your page ranking and their ability to bring traffic to your site from places on the Internet. Users will follow links they find in content if the back link is labelled with relevant text. ‘Anchor text’ is the name given to the text label on a back link and is used by the search engines in assessing the value of a back link. Back links can vary in value.

Back links from web pages that contain content related to your web page have an impact on the authority of your web page. The more authority a web page has the more authority is passed on to you.

The key objective of any web site should be to attract visitors and before you build your web site you should have an understanding of how you are going to attract visitors. It doesn’t matter what content you intend to put on your web pages there can only be one reason for a web pages existence and that is to get people to visit it. You should be focusing the majority of your efforts on getting your visitors from the search engines. The most economical and focused traffic is delivered by the search engines.

Search engines make money through presenting searchers with answers they are looking for. Searchers will return over and over again to a search engine that delivers the most relevant results. The more frequently users return to the search engine the more opportunity and income the search engines create. Your task is to work to achieve similar goals for your web pages.Position yourself in the mind of your users as a relevant source of information and make them visit over and over again.

So how do you go about doing this?. There are two methods that you can use. You can write useful and relevant content or you can use the advertising methods offered by search engines and other properties.

Search engines have a simple philosophy that nothing exists on the web without a keyword or a key phrase . The user typing a keyword or phrase into the search engine starts the search process. The keyword entered by the user causes the search engine to search its indexes for the most accurate and relevant web pages. Search engines decide what web pages are returned by using two prime factors – authority and relevance.

Authority is determined in the main by search engines view of how many back links a web page has and relevance is related to the presence of keywords in the content of the web page(s). The profile in terms of authority and the volume of back links are used by the search engines in deciding the position or ranking of a web page in the list of search results.

Back links are the sledge hammers of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).

Back links have two important properties their ability to influence your page ranking and their ability to bring traffic to your site from places on the Internet. People searching for and reading relevant content will click on the back links that contain text related to their quest and subsequently be directed to your web pages. This text in the back link is known as ‘anchor text’ and this too is taken into consideration by the search engines. Back links can vary in value.

The authority on the page from which a back links originates can influence the potency of the link to your web page.Web pages with more authority pass more authority onto your pages .
