The world of SEO (search engine optimisation) is full of controversy. You will find plenty of contradiction as some gurus say one thing and others something else. Not surprising since the algorithms used by the various search engines are shrouded in mystery.
One aspect of SEO that most reputable gurus would agree on is the importance of Backlinks. Backlinks are simply links to a site from other websites. Interlinking is one of the key, fundamental strengths of HTML (hypertext markup language) enabling readers to simply click on a linked word, phrase or web address and visit the linked resource.
Links are fundamentally for the benefit of web users. But links are also enormously useful to search engines. The words used as the link text (anchor text) can provide an indication of what is at the end of the link. The context in which the link appears can also provide an indication of the topic of the linked resource.
Without dwelling for too long on the pros and cons of various potential link sources and whether links from source ‘a’ are more powerful than links from source ‘b’ I thought I would share with you a few simple but effective, tried and tested link-development techniques.
My first suggestionis well known. Provide some ‘bait’ and other sites will link to yours without being asked. Linkbait (as it is called) can be anything from a simple image to a complex web application. Some popular and powerful linkbait examples include online quizzes, calculators, fact-sheets, tutorials and videos. Creating something that people find amusing is always a winner.
Another technique that I have used, with some success, is telling site owners about issues with their sites and suggesting fixes. Doing so establishes a relationship which can then be used to request a link. The typical issues that I have reported back to site owners include broken links, security issues, failure to meet web content accessibility guidelines, typos and spelling errors and standards compliance issues.
An old and well known technique that I have begun to use again recently, after having shelved it for some time, is simply emailing site owners asking for a link. To raise the chances of my being provided with a free link I have tried to target sites with related content and suggested to the site owner that their visitors might appreciate or benefit from such a link. I’ve also added content to my site specifically to back up my link request.
Another link-development related activity that always provides some useful potential link sources is profiling the sites and pages that are at the top of Google for certain target keyterms. For example, I recently carried out some Linkbuilding work for a car leasing company so I started by conducting a number of searches using various related terms including car and van leasing. lease cars, contract hire etc. Then I carried out a detailed backlink analysis of the pages that were returned at the top in Google. This presenteda number of relevant, niche directories where I could easily submit links and a few other useful sources. This activity also provides a good picture of what I needed to beat in order to see my client site at the top of the Google SERPs.
